Birding Index HelpGeneralThis index search is designed to allow you to locate articles from Birding based on the author of the article, a subject of the article, or the title of a book/media review. The search screen has three input areas corresponding to these three types of search. Only one search type can be processed at a time. For searches on authors and species (in the subject search), the index has been created to mimic a printed index, with primary and secondary index words. Thus, Brian Small will be found under 'Small' (not Brian) and Ivory-billed Woodpecker will be found under 'Woodpecker' (not Ivory-billed). Search results can be limited to more-recent issues by using the drop-down list called 'Issues to Search.' Search results can also be displayed in several different sequences, depending on the type of search. Use the 'Sort Result By' drop-down list to select a desired sequence. The search database has been designed to reflect the same information as the prior three printed indices, published by ABA in 1991, 1993, and 1997. It does not provide abstracts, full text of article, or full scientific citation information. Author Search Authors have been placed in the index using the format Lastname, Firstname. You may enter all or part of an author's last name and optionally, a comma and a space and then the first name. Some examples: Baicich, Paul (Everything written by Paul Baicich) Dunne (Everything written by Pete Dunne) Eckert (Everything written by Cameron Eckert, Kim Eckert, and Thomas Eckert) Eckert, K (Everything written by Kim Eckert) All authors of each article are shown separately in the Author Index, using the most complete form of their name. Subject Search Unlike some of the earlier printed index publications, which had separate sections for species and location entries, all entries now have been merged alphabetically into a single Subject Index. Cross reference entries ('See' and 'See also') have been included where appropriate, and have been made into clickable links to initiate a new search on the referenced term. Subjects include: Common species names, entered as Family, Species. Thus, a search on 'Ani' will show all articles about Smooth-billed Anis and Groove-billed Anis; a search on 'Ani, G' will show only the Groove-billed Ani articles; a search on 'Groove-billed Ani' will NOT show any results. Common family names such as warblers, flycatchers, etc. Geographic names. Included (if ever referenced) are all states and provinces, countries, and some regions. Names of people, when they are the subject of an article, entered as Lastname, Firstname. General Subjects such as 'Telescopes', 'Vagrants', 'ABA Checklist', 'Big Day', etc. Book (and Media) Review Search The Book Review Index contains entries for books, games, journals, multimedia, software, tapes, CDs, and videos which have been reviewed in Birding. The search will find any word or words in the title of the reviewed publication. Thus, a search on 'Africa' will find all the reviews of publications which have the word Africa in the title. A search on 'America Egg' will retrieve all the reviews of books which have both 'America' and 'Egg' anywhere in the title. Corrections/Errata: These are indexed the same as the original article and include a reference to the original article's location. Letters to the Editor: Recent practice finds many letters now conveying substantive supplementary material or commentary on earlier articles. Therefore, most letters are now indexed by subject and author. All such letters will be coded CM and provide a reference to the earlier article. The compilers reserve the right to decide which letters to index. |
