INSTITUTE FOR FIELD ORNITHOLOGY

2002 IFO Arctic Breeding Bird Ecology Workshop

Instructors: Paul J. Baicich and Wayne R. Petersen . June 28-July 5, 2002

Other area specialties that were well observed included Bristle-thighed Curlew, Arctic Warbler, Northern Wheatear, Bluethroat, and Yellow Wagtail. A special bonus was the observation of a lovely drake Spectacled Eider, along with five Grizzly Bears and a large herd of Muskox!

The IFO group visits a new friend, Colby Carter, at his cabin on mile 68 of the Kougarok Road; it's just 4 miles short of the location where we hike for the Bristle-thighed Curlew (success!), Photo by Paul J. Baicich

In short, the weather was cooperative; the local folks were friendly; the birds were spectacular.

Special thanks is extended to the staff of the Northwest Campus of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks who graciously let our group utilize their indoor campus facilities, the Nome Convention and Visitors Bureau for a variety of assistances provided, and to Peter Bente, wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, whose companionship and local expertise were most appreciated by all in attendance.

We ended our IFO workshop with a big pot-luck dinner at the apartment shared by Paul Baicich and Wayne and Betty Petersen. Photo by Paul J. Baicich

We hope you will join us next year for this most enjoyable and informative Arctic experience!
