BIRDERS' EXCHANGE RECIPIENTS
Report from Fundación de Protección Animal

Loja Ecuador, is the isolated gateway to the Podocarpus National Park and an amazing diversity of birdlife. An estimated 6% of the world's birds (a minimum of 560 species) live within the park's boundaries, with new species being discovered still. Although known worldwide, few Lojanos are aware of the biological treasures present at their backdoor. According to a survey performed by the local tourism ministry, only 5% of the local population has visited Podocarpus, whose principal entrance is only 15km from Loja´s central plaza.
The Fundación de Protección Animal, FPA (Animal Protection Foundation) is working towards changing people's perception and appreciation of animals. During the last three years, FPA has been promoting avian conservation through various public education programs. We strongly advocate that wild birds are best left in the wild where they can be admired singing and flying freely. Recently, through a generous donation from the Birders´ Exchange Program, we have expanded our public education efforts to include a Bird Seminar for children and Enrichment Workshops for high school science teachers. Rousing interest in birdlife is always easier in the field through direct observation. Now with the binoculars, spotting scope, backpacks and bird guides donated by the Birders´ Exchange, we can bring the world of birds more easily to the community.
