A Bird's-Eye View newsletter is written by ABA's student members under the editorship of teen-birders Andy Bankert and Andrew Sigerson, with oversight from Jen Brumfield, the newsletter's Editorial Advisor.
A Bird's-Eye View covers identification, field skills, bird-finding, optics, birding stories, artwork, news and events, and much more. We welcome contributions from young birders — articles, poems, and artwork about birds and birding. We want to hear about your birding experiences. Please email beview@aba.org with your ideas.
About the editors:
Andy Bankert, 17, lives in the town of Melbourne Beach in central Florida and has been a regular contributor to BEV over the past few years. Andy's interest in nature and birding was sparked by a friend of his father's when Andy was five. Andy became serious about birding when his dad took him to see a Fork-tailed Flycatcher that had shown up in his county. His favorite area to bird is the beach becasuse of the diversity from season to season. Fall is his favorite season at the beach becasuse he can study migrating ducks and jaegers over the ocean. Andy is also a tip leader for the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida and a board member of his local Audubon chapter. Calculus and physics are his favorite subjects in school, since he especially likes math. Although he has not thought about college a whole lot, Andy is considering majoring in environmental engineering.
Andrew Sigerson, 18, lives in Wantage, New Jersey, a rural township in the northwestern corner of the Garden State. He has been birding avidly for eight years, primarily in the Northeast. Although Andrew has had a keen interest in nature for his whole life, his interest in birding was first sparked by a Warbling Vireo that he discovered in his front yard when he was 10. He birds daily in his hometown and maintains a birding website for Sussex County, where he lives. Shorebirds are Andrew's favorite bird group because of their amazing migrations and the ID challenges they present. His favorite aspects of birding include bird distribution, nature art/photography, and just being out in the field learning about birds and other wildlife. Although Andrew's main interest and obsession is birding and nature, he is also into music. He plays guitar and saxophone and his favorite musical genre is rock. Andrew hopes to attain a degree in Wildlife Biology and eventually get a job involving ornithology.
